Blessing of the Animals - Celebrating God's Creatures at Saint James

Mark your calendars for one of the most heartwarming events of the year at Saint James Episcopal Church! Our annual Blessing of the Animals is Sunday, October 5th, 12pm, at our beautiful Outdoor Chapel. This is one of favorite services. It brings together families, pets, and the community to celebrate the bond between humans and the animals God has placed in our care.

Now in its third year at Saint James, this beloved tradition connects us to Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, whose feast day we celebrate each October. Whether you have a faithful dog, a curious cat, a colorful bird, or any other companion, all are welcome to receive Father Taylor's individual blessing.

The Story Behind the Blessing of the Animals

The Blessing of the Animals tradition stems from Saint Francis Assisi blessing animals and his deep love for all of God's creation. As the patron saint of animals, Saint Francis believed that all living creatures deserved respect, care, and blessing. He famously preached to birds and called all animals his brothers and sisters, recognizing them as fellow creations of God.

At Saint James, we share this belief that "all living things are created by God and deserve our love and care. Having a special service of blessing emphasizes that fact." This annual celebration helps us to reflect on our responsibility as caretakers of God's creation while honoring the special relationships we have with our animal companions.

What to Expect at Our Blessing of the Animals

Our Blessing of the Animals is a welcoming and stress-free event for both pets and their families. The service will take place at our Outdoor Chapel, which is a nice natural setting that helps keep animals relaxed. Father Taylor will offer a prayer for animals and then provide individual blessings for each pet present.

One of the most remarkable things about this service is how well-behaved the animals tend to be. "The animals seem to know this is a special occasion and there is very little barking or growling. They get into the spirit of it." says one of our organizers. The peaceful atmosphere makes the blessing meaningful for everyone attending.

All Animals Welcome

We truly mean it when we say all animals are welcome at our blessing service. Over the years, we've blessed dogs, cats, birds, and even more unusual pets. There was "a snake one year - a little unnerving!" but every creature receives the same loving blessing.

For safety and comfort, certain animals should be brought in carriers or cages, including snakes, guinea pigs, rats, and some birds. Dogs should always be on leashes. These simple precautions help ensure everyone - both two-legged and four-legged attendees - has a positive experience.

Remembering Beloved Pets

One of the most touching aspects of our blessing service is that we also welcome photos of pets who have passed away. These beloved pets get blessed too, which brings comfort to families who want to remember animals that meant so much to them. We know that losing a pet doesn't mean the love goes away.

Easy Participation - No Registration Required

Planning to attend is simple - just show up! There's no need to register in advance or make special arrangements. The service is scheduled for 12 noon, right after our 10 AM Sunday service, giving people time to go home and get their animals. Those who live far away are welcome to bring their pets to church with them and wait between services.

Even if you don't have a pet, you're absolutely welcome to attend and enjoy this celebration of God's creation. Many people come simply to experience the joy of seeing so many beloved animals receiving blessings.

A Complete Community Celebration

The Blessing of the Animals is more than just a brief service, it's a full community celebration. After the blessings are complete, everyone is invited to stay for a parish luncheon featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, and salads served on our back patio. This fellowship time lets families, pets, and the entire Saint James community connect and share stories about their animal buddies.

Prayer for Animals

Our annual blessing provides an opportunity for prayer for pets and reflection on our relationship with all of God's creation. The service reminds us that caring for animals is part of our calling as Christians and that the love we share with our pets reflects God's love for all creation.

Many people find deep spiritual meaning in asking for God's blessing on their animal companions. Whether you want to pray for your pet's health and safety, or just say thanks for all the happiness they bring you, this service gives you a chance to do that.
