Renovation Time at Saint James Episcopal Church

Saint James Episcopal Church is getting some well-deserved attention this month. After years of waiting, starting Monday, July 7th, we're finally able to tackle some important maintenance projects that will help our historic James Island church continue serving the community for years to come.

Church Services Continue During Charleston Church Renovation

The renovation focuses on two main areas that have been in need of attention for some time. First, we're addressing the paint that's been flaking on the sanctuary ceiling. We'll be removing all the old paint and applying fresh coats to those areas.

The second part of the project involves our front entrance. The doors that welcome people to our Episcopal Church in Charleston SC, are getting completely sandblasted, and we're replacing all the door hardware. These doors see a lot of use between our regular church services and the many Charleston weddings and events we host throughout the year.

The Backstory

Church maintenance had been on hold while we waited for the final Supreme Court decision. Now that Saint James has returned to the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, we can focus on these repairs and upgrades as funds become available. It feels good to finally move forward with taking care of our church building.

Sunday Church Services Moving to Great Hall

During the 2-3 week renovation period starting Monday, July 7th, Sunday services won't be held in the main sanctuary. Instead, we'll be gathering in the Great Hall of the Saint James Center. Many people are already familiar with this space from our church events and wedding receptions, so it'll work perfectly as our temporary worship home.

The good news is that this won't affect weekday events, choir practice, or other regular activities. Those will continue as scheduled in their usual locations.

Historic Churches in Charleston SC - Maintaining Our Legacy

As one of the historic churches in Charleston SC, Saint James has a responsibility to maintain its buildings for future generations. This renovation represents more than just fresh paint and new door hardware, it's about caring for a sacred space that has served the James Island community since the early 1700s.

Churches throughout Charleston understand the importance of regular maintenance, especially for buildings with such rich histories. The original Saint James chapel was built around 1722, and while the current church building dates to 1959-1960, it carries forward centuries of worship tradition.

Episcopal Church Life in Charleston

For those unfamiliar with Episcopal traditions, our church services follow the Book of Common Prayer. We believe in following the teachings of Jesus Christ and welcome people of all backgrounds. As an Episcopal Church in Charleston SC, we're part of a tradition that values both scripture and reason in our faith journey.

Our music program adds richness to every service, with our choir performing during the 10am service and special occasions throughout the year.

We host various church events throughout each month, so be sure to check our church events calendar to stay up-to-date on everything happening at Saint James.

Looking Ahead

While the renovation timeline is relatively short, the impact will be lasting. Fresh paint and restored entrance doors will help our church continue welcoming both longtime members and first-time visitors with the dignity our beautiful historic church deserves.

The renovation project represents an investment in our future as a congregation. Churches in Charleston face unique challenges due to coastal weather and historic building maintenance, but these updates will help protect our sanctuary for years to come.

Community and Connection

Saint James has always been more than just a building. We're a community that gathers for worship, serves our neighbors, and celebrates life's important moments together. Whether someone is looking for churches Charleston-wide or specifically seeking an Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, we provide a welcoming space for spiritual growth.

Our commitment to inclusion means all baptized Christians are welcome to participate in Holy Communion during our church services. We also have many opportunities for involvement through various ministries, from our altar guild to our ushers and lectors.

Moving Forward Together

This renovation might seem like a small thing, but it's part of caring for a sacred space that has witnessed countless baptisms, weddings, funerals, and Sunday services over the decades. As we temporarily move our worship to the Great Hall, we're reminded that church isn't really about the building it's about the people who gather there.

The work will be completed in 2-3 weeks, and we'll be back in our refreshed sanctuary before you know it. In the meantime, we're excited to worship together in a different space and see how this change might offer new perspectives on our faith community.

See you on Sunday!
