Daughters of the King - Welcome the Teresa of Calcutta Chapter
Saint James Episcopal Church is thrilled to announce the establishment of our own Daughters of the King (DOK) chapter. Named after Teresa of Calcutta, this group embodies service, prayer, and spiritual growth, aligning perfectly with our church's journey of renewal and growth.
A Legacy of Faith
Founded in 1885 in New York City, the Daughters of the King has a rich history of women seeking a deeper, more passionate relationship with Christ. The organization welcomes women and girls aged 7 to 107, all at different stages of their Christian journey. Our chapter continues this tradition, offering a space for women to grow spiritually and serve our community.
Our Journey
Two dedicated members, Georgie and Brenda, sparked the formation of our chapter after discovering their shared DOK background. New members underwent a rigorous five-month study and discernment process, exploring:
The meaning of Christian faith
The purpose of a spiritual order
Community building through prayer, service, and evangelism
Personal spiritual gifts
Developing individual Rules of Life and Prayer
This process isn't taken lightly—each participant spent considerable time in prayer and reflection before committing to this path.
Why Teresa of Calcutta?
After studying various saints, we unanimously chose Teresa of Calcutta as our namesake. Her life exemplified service to the world's most vulnerable people, inspiring our chapter's focus on prayer and outreach.
Our Mission and Plans
Living by the motto "For His Sake," we're committed to serving God's people and supporting our clergy and volunteers. Our initial plans include:
Installing Prayer Boxes on campus and praying for submitted requests
Supporting clergy through dedicated prayer
Exploring the possibility of establishing a labyrinth in the churchyard
Offering prayer support to the larger St. James community
As we begin our monthly meetings, we'll continue to discern how best to support our church and community.
The Importance of Community
The institution of our chapter was honored by the presence of the DOK South Carolina Deanery president and board members. This support from the larger DOK community empowers us as we establish our presence and move forward in our mission.
Join Us
Are you interested in deepening your faith and serving others? The Daughters of the King offers a unique opportunity to grow spiritually while making a difference. Here's how you can learn more:
Look for DOK brochures at the back of the church
Speak with Georgie, Brenda, or any of our members about their experiences

A Rule of Life
Each Daughter develops her own Rule of Life, reflecting her unique spiritual journey. This Rule, incorporating prayer and service, is developed prayerfully with God's guidance. It's flexible and regularly reviewed to accommodate changing life circumstances and spiritual growth.
As we embark on this new chapter, we invite you to join us in prayer, service, and fellowship. Together, we can strengthen our church community and reach out to those in need, always striving to deepen our relationship with Christ.
