Celebrate Christmas 2024 at Saint James Episcopal Church on James Island

Join us this December as Saint James Episcopal Church celebrates the wonderful season of Christmas! From traditional Christmas Eve services to festive community gatherings, our historic Charleston church on James Island welcomes you to experience the joy and wonder of the season. Below are some of many fun church events during Christmas this year!

Support Our Christmas Music & Flower Ministry

Make this Christmas season even more meaningful by contributing to our Christmas Flowers and our new organ. Your generous donation can honor loved ones or express gratitude while enhancing our holiday celebrations. These gifts support the beautiful floral arrangements that adorn our church and the uplifting music that fills our sanctuary during this sacred season and all year long.

To contribute, simply place your check in the offering plate with "Christmas flowers" or "Christmas music" in the memo line. Consider also making a special gift to our organ fund—a wonderful way to celebrate the season while supporting our church's musical future.

Parish Gift Exchange & Cookie Swap - December 15

Start your Christmas celebrations with our beloved Parish Gift Exchange & Cookie Swap following the 10:00 AM service in the Saint James Center. Bring a wrapped gift (valued at $20 or less) and your favorite holiday cookies to share. You'll leave with an assortment of delicious treats and a special gift from our church family.

Decorating Our Historic Beautiful Historic Church - December 22

Following our 10:00 AM service on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, join our church community in a cherished tradition - decorating Saint James for Christmas.

Help adorn our beautiful sanctuary and participate in the 2nd annual decorating of the Chrismon Tree. Regular morning services will be held at 8:00 and 10:00 AM, with Adult Christian Education at 9:00 AM in the Parlor.

Christmas Eve at Saint James - December 24

Experience the magic of Christmas Eve in one of Charleston's most beautiful churches:

• 4:40 PM - Traditional Carol Sing

• 4:55 PM - String Duets

• 5:00 PM - Festal Sung Eucharist

Our Christmas Eve service features masterpieces by Gustav Holst, Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, Pietro Yon, and John Jacob Niles. The evening culminates in our cherished tradition of singing Silent Night by candlelight, creating an unforgettable moment of peace and reflection.

The Sacred Role of Music in Our Services

At Saint James, music plays a vital role in our worship experience. The Prelude, played before the service, creates a sacred atmosphere that helps prepare our hearts and minds for worship. We invite you to use this time for quiet reflection and prayer. The Postlude, performed after the dismissal, provides a musical blessing as we depart. Let's honor these musical offerings by enjoying them in prayerful silence, allowing all to experience their spiritual significance.

Christmas Season Services

• December 25 (Christmas Day) - No midweek service
• December 29 - Special Combined Service at 10:00 AM featuring Christmas Lessons & Carols with Holy Eucharist (Nursery available)
• January 1 - No midweek service
