Join us at Saint James Episcopal Church on James Island as we celebrate one of Christianity's most meaningful Christmas traditions - decorating our Chrismon Tree. On Sunday, December 22, following our 10 AM service, our church community will gather to adorn our evergreen tree with symbols that tell the story of Christ.

The Sacred History of a Chrismon Tree

The word "Chrismon" combines "Christ" and "monogram," creating beautiful symbols that represent our faith. This tradition began in 1957 when the Ascension Lutheran Church of Danville, Virginia first used these symbols to "proclaim the name, the life and the saving acts of Jesus the Christ" on their Christmas tree.

The Symbolism in Every Detail

Each element of our Chrismon Tree carries deep spiritual meaning:

  • The evergreen tree symbolizes eternal life

  • White lights remind us that Christ is the light of the world

  • White ornaments represent Christ's purity and perfection

  • Gold decorations symbolize His majesty and glory

Sacred Symbols on Our Chrismon Tree

Our Chrismons include ancient and meaningful Christian symbols:

  • The Chi Rho (IHC or IHS) - a Greek abbreviation for Jesus

  • Crosses - representing Christ's sacrifice

  • Fish - an early symbol used by Christians to identify fellow believers

  • Doves - symbolizing peace and the Holy Spirit

  • Stars - including the five-pointed star representing Christ's revelation

  • The Crown - symbolizing Jesus as King of Kings

  • Alpha and Omega - representing Christ as the beginning and end
